Lexington-connected filmmakers Eren McGinnis and Ari Luis Palos are following up their hit documentary on University of Kentucky Opera Theatre director Everett McCorvey, Impresario, with a film about McCorvey's American Spiritual Ensemble (soloist LaToya Lain pictured, left) and the spiritual itself. The film is set to premier at the Kentucky Theatre at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 and is slated for broadcast on PBS in February. "We just finished the movie, and it is a pint-sized opus," McGinnis wrote in an e-mail. "I am really excited about this one, and we mailed it off to the Sundance Film Festival yesterday." The film will chronicle the work of the Ensemble, which is dedicated to keeping the spiritual alive, as well as tell the story of the spiritual, songs that were sung by slaves to buoy their spirits and communicate in code. McGinnis and Palos' other productions include Beyond the Boarder, a documentary about Mexican laborers in Kentucky.
