Opera lovers in Central Kentucky have spent the last week chattering about Gregory Turay’s stunning performance in the UK Opera Theatre’s La Traviata last Sunday.
But there’s some good news from Turay’s brother, also. Michael Turay (shown, right, in a 2002 photo by Joseph Rey Au) has booked a tour of Wonderful Town that will have him hitting the road next month and out until May 20. Turay will be playing a small part, Officer Lonigan, and understudying the lead, Robert Baker. Turay says the tour route is still being worked out, but we'll let you know if it strays close to Lexington.
Folks who followed Turay while he was a student at the University of Kentucky know this looks like a great move for him. While it was tempting for him to try to follow in his brother's operatic footsteps, Michael clearly has a gift for musical theater. His brightest moments were performances such as the dance number in Street Scene, the title character in Stephen Foster, the Musical in Bardstown and Carl-Magnus in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music. Leonard Bernstein's Wonderful Town should be a nice showcase for Michael.
