Tonight I'll cover the Barnstable-Brown party for the 10th straight year . . . don't everyone clap at once. Anyway, there are a lot of fun memories from the Derby Eve soiree, starting with Robert Duvall being the coolest interview back in 1998 and Kevin Richardson being very gracious at the height of his fame. But I also routinely seem to get psyched about offbeat guests, and this year is no different. While the football crowd will be into reigning Super Bowl champ Peyton Manning, the rockers will want to see Gene Simmons and a lot of guys will want to see his wife, I am stoked that Ross the Intern will be there. Ross, for those of you who go to bed when you should, is Ross Matthews, a regular contributor to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. (The copyrighted Paul Drinkwater photo for NBC, above, shows Leno and Ross.) The first time I saw Ross, I didn't quite know what to make of him, but as an unrepentant night owl, I've become a big fan, particularly when he works red carpets. Check out his Golden Globes segment. In particular, check out the greeting from Spielberg, and then what happens after that. The guy just strikes this great balance between fawning fan and merry prankster. Often the key to Ross' humor is he presents the stars with an overwhelming personality to react to. (Witness Steve Carell's, "You're scaring the hell out of me," in the Globes video.) And he writes a fun blog, too. So Jamie, enjoy K-Fed and Larry. Just leave me the Ross interview.
~ The Tonight Show publicist says Ross' Derby segment is currently scheduled to run May 10th.
