There aren't a whole lot of events that bring art connoisseurs and baseball fans together -- not that the pursuits are mutually exclusive. But the Cincinnati Art Museum has one. Wednesday night, the museum in gorgeous Eden Park will unveil a poster print of Andy Warhol's portrait of Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose.
It's not often that icons from such disparate fields come together, but
it was actually the Cincinnati Art Museum that made it happen. The
museum commissioned the pop art legend, who died in 1987, to create a
portrait of the all-time Major League hit champion in 1985. The original portrait hangs in the museum, and out of everything in the museum, it is the piece people most frequently request in poster form. But this is the first time rights have been granted to reproduce the piece as a poster.
The poster will be unveiled at a cocktail reception, which is open to the public, at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Museum. Cincinnati gallery owner and art collector Carl Solway will speak about how the poster came to be.
A limited number of framed, numbered prints, signed by Rose, will be available for $500. Regular posters will be $50. Proceeds from the sales will go to the museum and the Reds Community Fund.
This appears to have Warhol's typical lack of original work, or his willingness to copy another's work then ta-da to change the color palette. It's like a well-made cake, it looks original but its just a copy of another's creation.
